Its All About Women!

Our Opportunities are Endless

By Michael Harvey On July 27th, 2012

“Time to pay the bills…”

That’s probably one of the least favorite phrases on the planet!

If you’re like most people, one of the most challenging days of each month is the day you have to pay the bills – especially those outrageous electricity bills.

But here’s some good news…

There are few simple things you can do to reduce your power bill, and here are some of the most effective:

Tip #1 Have a Discussion

Make sure to discuss the importance of saving electricity with everyone else in your family.

During the discussion, make sure you suggest a few rules, like switching off the lights whenever leaving the room.

One incentive is to reward them with a special treat of some kind if their participation has led to savings.

Tip #2 Pay Attention to Details

There are many, many drops of water that make up an ocean. Make sure you switch off all appliances even if you are sure you will be back in five minutes.

It may not sound like much but it will help save money and energy!

You might already be switching off the television set or turning off the fan, but perhaps you leave on a nightlight or emergency light on in every room…?

Yes, we like to be able to see at night, but take note of your personal usage and decide if these need to be switched on in all rooms.

These small precautions will lead to big power savings in the long run.

Tip #3 Be a Smart Investor

Invest smartly on power.

Replace all the incandescent bulbs in the house with compact fluorescent light, or CFL, bulbs. These bulbs consume less electricity, which will lead to smaller bills.

You should also look into buying energy saver gadgets.

These gadgets can monitor the intake of the entire power supply in your house and inspire you to control the usage.

Tip #4 It’s About How You Use Them

Most of us assume that our expensive electricity bills are the unwanted side effects of having a large number of electrical items in our homes.

The truth is your electricity bill is not directly connected or even affected by the number of electrical gadgets you own but how you use them!

To save electricity:

  1. The washing machine should be used only when you can pack in a full load of clothes.
  2. Take note to switch off the computer monitor when not in use. It consumes power when left on but just takes a second to switch it on again.
  3. If you use an air-conditioner, it should be kept at minimum high or low temperature.
  4. Try an indoor clothes rack to dry your clothes, rather than using your electric tumble dryer. Even better, on sunny days, hang your clothes outside!

Tip #5 Increase Your Knowledge

Research the multiple ways you can save even more energy and money.

Energy saving guides like Earth4Energy offer some of the best methods to save electricity at home.

Of course, the bonus is you won’t just have a much cheaper electricity bill to pay…

You’ll also be doing Mother Earth a big favor!

Who else in your life would appreciate a huge decrease in their monthly power bill?

A. J. Sinclair says:

The recommendation #3 needs more precautions. Fluorescent lights deplete the vitamin D in your body, be sure to add more of this vitamin to your diet. Some of them flicker which causes stress so be certain you are changing them often enough and making certain that the lamp is correctly wired. The newer CLF bulbs are advertised to last a very long time. This is only true if you do not turn them on and off. Our CLF yard lights last a long time because we never turn them off and the Minnesota temperatures range from about 40 below zero to 105 above zero so the bulbs are tough. Indoor CLFs do not last any longer than incandescent bulbs.
