They may look innocent in their pretty jars, but cosmetics and beauty products can be a toxic overload for your skin and face.
Even if the label says “natural” or “organic”…
It doesn’t mean it’s safe.
As long as there are trace levels of a few natural extracts, manufacturers can still call it “natural”, even if the rest of it’s toxic for your skin.
That’s why it’s important for you to know the facts.
Here’s a list of common beauty ingredients you must avoid in order to maintain your skin’s natural health and beauty and protect your skin from harmful agents.
Blacklist #1: Alpha Hydroxyacids (AHAs)
Alpha-hydroxyacids (AHAs) are popular in anti-aging products. But beware, because in the long run, AHAs makes your skin age more rapidly!
AHAs act like sandpaper.
In the short run, you will see your wrinkles smoothen out.
But over time, it strips away natural hydration and causes inflammation, robbing your skin of its natural youth.
Blacklist #2: Petrolatum
Petrolatum is a common moisturizing ingredient for skin.
In actuality, it dries your skin.
As a semi-solid mixture of hydrocarbons, it suffocates and clogs pores. This leads to even worse chapped skin, and eventually enlarges your pores altogether!
Blacklist #3: Hydroquinone
Hydroquinone is a popular lightener to help even skin tone, reduce age spots and lighten dark pigmentation spots known as melasma. In the long run however, hydroquinone can actually have the opposite effect and can cause discoloration.
Blacklist #4: Parabens
Parabens like propylparaben and parahydroxybenzoate are very common preservatives in cosmetics, skin care and hair care products.
The Daily Mail reported a study that has found parabens to be present in all breast tumors.
While the potential link between paraben chemicals and cancer is yet to be proven, it is best to stay safe by choosing paraben-free beauty products.
Look for alternative preservative ingredients such as Vitamin C or Vitamin E.
Blacklist #5: Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)
Commonly used in soaps, shampoos and toothpastes, SLS is the “foaming” ingredient that creates the lathering, bubbly effect in cosmetic products.
SLS cannot be metabolized by the liver, and its effects are therefore much longer lasting.
Even products with SLS concentrations as low as 0.5% can cause irritations, while in higher concentrations, detrimental health effects of SLS include hormone imbalance, eye irritation, protein denaturing and is a carcinogenic.
Blacklist #6: Synthetic Dyes
Look out for synthethic dyes derived from aluminum.
These are most commonly found in lipsticks.
These dyes can be absorbed into our bodies and be stored in our organs and fatty tissues. Some of the consequent harmful effects include allergies and skin abrasions.
Blacklist #7: Soap-based Emulsifiers
They may not sound evil, but soap-based emulsifiers can wreak havoc on your skin.
This harmful ingredient can be listed as different names like emulsifying wax, polysorbate, stearate, steareth, cetearyl, ceteareth, and many others.
Even worse are ethoxylated emulsifiers which contain 1.4 dioxane – reported by the FDA as a carcinogen…
Yet they’re NOT even required to be included on the list of product ingredients!
Support Your Skin’s Natural Renewal Process
In sum, many of these ingredients offer short-term results, but don’t actually support your skin’s natural renewal process.
Thus, it just becomes an invitation for rapid aging and wrinkles.
